Dana Harper:

Columbus, Ohio-based installation artist Dana Harper crafts large, yet intimate spaces that engender joy, compassion and wonder within the viewer. Her work highlights the importance of individuality, diversity and the power of community, while simultaneously facilitating an experience that is “...unclaimed by the patriarchy and free of institutionalized racism.” Harper is the recipient of an ArtPrize Seed Grant, ArtFile Emerging Artist Grant, a Ringholz Foundation Award and an Ohio Arts Council Professional Award.

Artist Statement:
My practice is centered around the creation of joy - spreading light and empowerment by demonstrating acts of beauty and love. Utilizing manipulated material, size, color and light, each work is dreamlike and otherworldly, a new invented world to exist and be, a place that belongs to anyone. Installations are physical manifestations of my energy, not only a playground for exploration but for spiritual revival. Inspired by the carefree nature of play and childhood, the works engage viewers through imagination and touch. They are a safe space, a place to connect, enjoy and invigorate the spirit.

Drawing from endless references allows the work to remain approachable for all people. Material that inspires me is visually reminiscent of toys, games and tv shows from my childhood, the late 1980s to the 1990s. Neons, bright pastels, holographic and translucent materials transport me to my own childlike sensibilities, a time in which I was unaware of societal expectations and judgements. When researching new objects and materials to work with, I am paying attention to their potential to become something new. These unconventional materials are the beginning of every project and are the basis for experimentation. The material play leads to discovering a new technique that becomes the backbone of a larger installation. These new processes separate the material from its utilitarian use but are simple enough to create mass on my own with no need for special technologies or studios. 

The touching, cutting and caring of each material creates intimacy between artist and medium. Labor is folded into the work by necessity but completed through love and dedication. As multiple pieces come together to create a massive environment, the work highlights the importance of individuality, diversity and the power of community. As an American woman and a minority, my experience has left me understanding the need for new uninhibited space, unclaimed by the patriarchy and free of institutionalized racism.

Nature, both micro and macro, inform composition and form. Each work is delicate and cloud-like, emerging through multiple marks, with minimal structure or solidity. They are reliant on the ceiling or wall, growing and attaching naturally to this reality. Works are in a constant state of growth, made of many pieces that interchange and fluctuate in composition, each one malleable and in flux.
